Shuriken build! No really, stop laughing!

Sooo... in light of the upcomic epic feats that I can't tell you about, and the Shiradi Champion epic destiny that I can't tell you about either, I figured I'd get Iris up to 20 ASAP, *not* pick an epic destiny (if the expansion is live at this point, I mean), TR her again and zoom through a life of either Ranger, Barbarian or Druid (I'll decide once I know what the Druid past life does), pick the Shiradi destiny, then immediately TR her again to do a shuriken build. Yes, really. I was thinking something like this...

Well, by now you all know about the epic feats. Razz Decided not to bother with an intermediate life - I'll just go for this straight away, even if that means having to level up some other destinies first. Shadowdancer has plenty of useful stuff in it that I'd want to twist in at some point in any case, may as well max that out.

I might even do some destiny grinding *before* I TR her. She'll have to start in the Arcane sphere, but assuming I manage to max out Fatesinger (not hard to do) I'll be able to go into Shadowdancer next life anyway. Might get some of the initial Magister / Draconic Incarnation stuff while I'm at it, too. Hey, extra Fate Points are useful.

Really a shuriken build that doesn't involve 10k stars? I guess the rune arm probably adds more dps over the long haul, and you can't use them together.

Oh yeah, definitely making one of those. And a LitII. And one with holy/goodburst/good blast/greater disruption, I think.

Grabbed a couple returning shurikens from the AH to craft, too. Got one silver and one byeshk so far, bidded on an adamantine that didn't have a buyout listed.

Gonna try to get a Snowstar (from Cult of the Six) before I do it, too. +2 icy burst seems pretty good for minlvl 4.

Other reason for not going with 10k stars: That requires Monk 6, and I absolutely need 18 Rogue for those epic feats I'm not mentioning.

What's the "neat stuff" Arty gives besides rune arms? It seems to me that the rogue levels would be better due to the 4d6 sneak damage capstone. You'll be missing out of 5d6 sneak damage from the 2 rogue levels, which seems a bunch more than the runearm would would add (especially since some of those abilities scale based on Arty levels).

No no, I meant other neat stuff ON RUNE ARMS besides the damage they add. Bypassing DR here, a +4 to hit enchant there, various stuff like Seeker or Deathblock or whatever depending on the arm, blowing up boxes, etc. Lightning Strike Weapons if I manage to get a hold of Toven's Hammer, too...

Well... it isn't like that Runearm is giving you a free slot. An R20 version could still have a buckler or something giving deathblock or whatever. Sure, there are some cool things Runearms give you, but keep in mind Lightning Strike (quite possibly the most powerful thing to add) is still only 9.2 damage per hit... substantially less than the 17.5 damage per hit of 5d6 sneak damage. (Of course sneak is affected by fortification, and mobs have much more of that these days....)

When you're using crossbows, rune arms are awesome and a totally free slot, as normally a crossbow is a 2 handed weapon. But nothing stops you from having a shield or another weapon in your off hand while using thrown weapons.

Description


You are skilled with the use of the shuriken, and have a chance to
throw an additional one per throw. Percent change to throw an additional
shuriken is equal to your Dexterity.


Note


If holding a shield in your off-hand, you will not throw an extra
shuriken. Holding a weapon in your off-hand does allow throwing the
extra shuriken.

I did not know that.....

The main point stands though... you could hold a deathblock dagger of heavy fort in your offhand.

That really seems to depend on crafting.... I doubt you'll find many useful weapons for this odd purpose if you're not a crafter. If you craft though (which I guess includes just getting shards from crafters), I think 5d6 sneak + offhand weapon is better than the runearm.

And all of that is completely superfluous if you're plan is to have your ninja star chucking toon wearing a rune arm because "RuneArms are Cool".

Cool always wins.

But no, there ARE other reasons too, but again, I can't discuss them because of NDA.

Mind you, considering how often the devs change their minds about how things are going to work, it's all still up in the air. I'm not going to finalize anything until the expansion actually goes live.

Heh... I have a feeling you got my " is cool" reference.... wasn't really expecting that. For the record... I also own a fez (well... its probably more the wife's....). And just last week while camping I saw a guy wearing one (with a kilt of all things). Fez's are cool....


Back to the topic at hand.... yes, you can put strange effects on weapons these days. Anything that can be put on a shield can also be put on a "off hand weapon", in addition to the normal weapon stuff (some of which like range alacrity, or I think sneak damage will apply to your thrown weapon). I believe an "off hand weapon" is any 1 handed, non-throwing weapon.

Well, the extra TR is only really necessary because I need to have at least 6 levels in either ranger, barbarian or druid in order to pick the destiny I want right away, rather than having to start with some other one. Razz

Just wish they'd put the beta back up so I can check if they decided what the druid Past Life is... :/

What's the max number of Shuriken you can throw at a time? And will you throw multiples of the same type if you throw returning shuriken? Or will it just clone the one you have armed?(To my understanding, returning ones don't stack, so that could eat up a lot of inventory space if you have to carry multiples of the same type)

Returning shuriken never technically leave your hand, so you just need one even when you supposedly throw several at once. With Shuriken Expertise, you can throw up to two at a time. 10k Stars lets you throw more than that, but that requires at least 6 monk levels and so cuts out a significant amount of Sneak Attack. Also, it requires lots of Wisdom to be effective, whereas Shuriken Expertise depends entirely on Dex.

I thought Shuriken Expertise stacked with your Dex and/or BAB as a Drow, and the higher your dex/BAB, the more Shuriken you threw. Hm. Guess I need to do more research on the subject. My understanding was that drow could throw more than two, though.

Well, let's see here. Now that I know at least what the active Druid past life feat does, I know I won't be taking it (at least not for this build). Even so I think I'll play through a life as a druid anyway, simply because I want to try the class out. I have no idea what the passive Druid past life does, but I'm sure it'll be useful for something at some point... if not necessarily this time around. Razz

I know that this plan/build is not something that would work for me, but it is interesting. Also, even it it does not work out for you, you can bet you will have a great time trying to make it work, besides, as exampled by Horible's build, the unconventional can be more fun than work.
